Winter ferries in Dalmatia: choose the route before the hotel

Check the two ports, your travel date and the return before booking an island stay. Vehicle ferries, passenger catamarans and Italy crossings need different checks.

For winter ferry travel in Dalmatia, choose the exact ports and verify both directions before booking an island hotel. A domestic car ferry, a foot-passenger catamaran and an overnight crossing from Italy are different travel arrangements. A route shown on a summer map does not confirm a winter departure, and arriving on an island does not necessarily put you in the town where you are sleeping.

Start with one island base and a mainland fallback. That makes it easier to respond if the first connection does not fit your arrival or if a sailing changes. You can add another island once the essential outward and return journeys are clear.

First decide whether the car is crossing

Vehicle ferries can carry cars; passenger ships and high-speed services cannot. If you are hiring a car, check that your rental arrangement permits the planned crossing. Then enter its correct dimensions, including anything carried outside the vehicle, in the operator's booking form. Do not assume a passenger ticket also pays for the vehicle.

If you are travelling on foot, compare the arrival port with the address of the accommodation. A shorter sea crossing can still leave a longer or less convenient land transfer. Before paying for the room, ask how you will reach it after your particular arrival and whether that transfer also works on the return day.

Read the winter date range and every footnote

Open the route's current operator timetable and find the period containing your travel date. Check the weekday, Sunday and public-holiday notes in both directions. A row of departure times without its footnotes is incomplete information.

For example, Jadrolinija's 2026 Split–Supetar timetable has a separate October–December section. Its early and late sailings have winter or holiday exceptions. The 2026 Split–Stari Grad PDF also marks some departures with date limits and holiday exclusions. Those details matter when you are trying to make a short island stay work.

These are examples of how to read a timetable, not a list of departures to reuse throughout winter. For January or February 2027, select the document or booking result covering that actual date. If the operator has not confirmed it, leave that leg unbooked or choose a refundable mainland plan. Do not roll a 2026 date forward yourself.

A ferry ticket may or may not reserve your sailing

Check the route's own conditions before buying. Jadrolinija describes Split–Supetar tickets as valid for a departure on the printed date, without reserving a particular sailing. Its Split–Stari Grad page describes a reservation for the selected departure. Buying online therefore does not mean the same thing on both routes.

For an unreserved vehicle route, allow for the boarding queue and choose an earlier target than the last workable departure. For a reserved route, follow the arrival deadline shown by the operator. Winter is not a reason to turn up at the ramp as the ship is leaving. Keep your booking and vehicle details available offline on the phone.

Check the final island transfer before choosing the room

Write out the full journey: mainland arrival, port, sea crossing, island port, transfer and check-in. Use place names throughout. “Split to Hvar” is not precise enough if the ferry lands at Stari Grad and the room is elsewhere. The same applies when a Brač arrival and a Brač hotel are in different towns.

Ask the accommodation for a concrete answer: can a bus, taxi or prearranged pickup meet this arrival on this date? If the answer is uncertain, compare a base close to the arrival port or add a mainland night. Our Supetar ferry or Bol catamaran guide explains the port-choice tradeoff. The Brač bases without a car comparison helps with the stay itself; check its suggested services against the winter operator timetable.

Protect the night before a flight

For a flight you cannot afford to miss, spending the previous night on the mainland is the more conservative plan. It removes the sea crossing from departure morning. It does not eliminate every travel risk, but it avoids depending on one boat to begin a chain with a fixed flight at the end.

Keep the same logic in mind for a day trip. Decide when to turn back, check whether a later return exists and be willing to stay in the mainland city if the island excursion would rely on a single workable sailing. A spare night in the plan is useful only if you know where you could spend it.

Italy crossings need a separate check

On 29 October 2026, Jadrolinija's passenger notice stated that its international sailings were cancelled until 5 January 2027. That notice concerns Jadrolinija's international services. It does not say that all domestic ferries are cancelled, or establish the availability of another operator.

If your trip begins in Italy, confirm the crossing before building the Croatian island stay around it. Read the chosen operator's current notice and booking result, then compare a road or air arrival if needed. A historic Ancona–Split timetable or a familiar summer sailing is not enough to book a winter hotel against.

The checks to make again before leaving

  1. Confirm both port names, travel date, direction and whether the service carries your car.

  2. Read route-specific ticket and boarding conditions, including holiday footnotes.

  3. Confirm the island transfer and accommodation check-in for the actual arrival.

  4. Check the operator's service status again before travelling to the port, and follow its instructions if the journey changes.

  5. Keep the mainland fallback and flight buffer practical rather than relying on a tight last connection.
