Split blends Roman history, ferry access, beaches, and city energy, making it the most versatile base in central Dalmatia.

Best timing
Late spring and early autumn keep the city lively while reducing the hardest peak-summer congestion.
Getting there
Split is the strongest logistics base in Dalmatia for ferries, bus routes, airport access, and island day trips.
Two days cover Diocletian's Palace, the Riva waterfront, Marjan Hill, and local beaches. Three to four days let you add island day trips (Brač, Hvar, or Vis), Krka National Park, and time for the food scene. Split works well as a 3-day base with excursions.
Split is mid-range by Mediterranean standards. A comfortable daily budget for two (mid-range hotel, restaurant meals, one activity) is roughly 130–180 EUR. Accommodation is 30–50% cheaper than Dubrovnik, and local restaurants outside the palace walls offer strong value.

Trip fit
Ideal for visitors who want one base that can handle culture, coast, nightlife, and onward travel.
Split offers better value, more varied beaches, stronger nightlife, and easier ferry access to central Dalmatian islands. Dubrovnik delivers more dramatic walls-and-sea scenery, a more polished atmosphere, and a stronger 'bucket list' feeling. Many itineraries include both — they're 4 hours apart by bus.
Jadrolinija has moved two late Sunday departures from Split. The Stari Grad ferry now leaves at 21:00, and the Rogač ferry at 21:15, both instead of 20:30.
